Frequently Asked Questions
Our distribution service has been designed to fill very specific gaps within the audiobook industry, primarily the lack of options for Royalty Share projects. But we can accommodate a number of situations, including:
- If the author/rights holder doesn’t want or know how to handle royalty payouts between multiple parties (including themselves) for the next several years.
- If royalty payments for a wide title need to be split between more than two parties (i.e. an author and 2 narrators).
- If the payment model agreed between the author/rights holder and narrator is not supported by the preferred distribution platform (i.e. Narrator-first arrangements).
- If the author/rights holder has a royalty share project they want distributed through a platform that doesn't support split payments (i.e. INAudio).
- If the author/rights holder lives in a country without access to a particular distribution platform.
Yes, we now offer à la carte distribution services for projects that we did not produce. However, these projects have to meet certain criteria and everything we take on is subject to our discretion. Please note we do not distribute AI-narrated audiobooks.
No. Although most distribution service fees are paid in royalties, we charge a flat one-time distribution fee. This fee covers the lifetime of the distribution contract, which is typically seven years.
No. In late 2024, we discontinued the option of distributing via ACX. This decision was based on our discomfort with the lack of transparency in the royalty reports we receive from ACX.
However, your audiobooks can still be available on Audible and Amazon.
Yes! If there is a particular retailer you would like to not send your book, just let us know.
*With respect to Royalty Share projects, Audiobook Empire considers all parties involved in the agreement to have equal say in any decisions that could potentially impact royalties. Significant changes must be agreed-upon by everyone involved (i.e. authors and narrators).
A distribution contract typically last seven years. However, we are able to accommodate other term lengths, as long as all parties agree.
After the initial agreed upon term has passed, you and other parties involved have the option to renew the contract. Alternatively, you can choose to buyout the other parties, as described next.
You'll always have the option to request to buyout the other parties involved in a Royalty Share project. With narrators, this means you pay the remainder of their fee, whatever has not already been paid in royalties, and their portion of the royalties reverts to you.
You do. Although we may offer guidance based on industry standards.
Yes. If you change your mind on the pricing or are planning to run a promotion, just email us and we can make that change for you. It can take some time to take effect, so be sure to let us know as soon as possible, especially for time-sensitive promotions.

Yes! All of our distribution clients can request an unlimited number of promotional codes. These are usually Spotify or Audiobooks.com codes.
We believe that the best way to not only earn out, but make a profit with your audiobook is by taking advantage of the AE Audio Outlet.
The Outlet is our very own retail platform and it was designed to help creatives earn more money from sales by cutting out the 'middle man'. It operates as a direct-to-consumer sales platform for audiobooks and offers 100% royalties. Yes, you read that right.
The Outlet also operates on a flat fee, so we still aren't taking any of your royalties. That's kind of a core belief around here. We also believe that direct-to-consumer audiobook sales are the future. As a bonus, our distribution clients get a 50% discount on a 1-year Outlet listing.
